The Mineral Promotion and Processing Centre conducts detailed studies on metals, non-metals, and precious and semi-precious minerals found in different regions of Nepal. It aims to promote mineral reserves by considering factors such as market demand, geographical location, infrastructure, and economic and environmental aspects. The center also provides laboratory services for mineral processing and analysis. The Department of Mines and Geology has organized the center to ensure the provision of quality services and technical expertise, with the Gazetted First Class Technical Officer (Superintendent Mining Engineer) supervising other technical experts. The heads of the branches/ sections are Gazetted Class II Officers specialized in Geology and Metallurgical Engineering.

Objectives of the Centre:

1. Conduct a detailed evaluation of mineral resources and promote feasibility studies encompassing financial, technical, and environmental aspects.
2. Promote mineral-based industries utilizing feasible, semi-proven, and proven mineral deposits through exploration and research.
3. Enhance the promotion and pricing of precious and semi-precious stones.
4. Provide laboratory services in gemology, mineralogy, and petrology.
5. Manage the necessary equipment, technology, and skilled manpower to process minerals within the country.

Functions of the Centre:

1. Develop minerals by adopting appropriate mining, mineral, and metallurgical technology and conducting feasibility studies.
2. Promote technologies for mining development and mineral promotion.
3. Study, research, and select the necessary laboratory technology for mineral processing.
4. Monitor the technical and environmental aspects of minerals and mineral-related industries.
5. Recommend infrastructure development based on the evaluation of mines and minerals, considering other relevant factors.
6. Conduct gemology-related training seminars at union, state, and local levels to carry out promotional activities.
7. Formulate policies and laws related to mining, mineral industries, and mineral processing.
8. Undertake promotion, monitoring, and other related activities as per the annual program of special mineral-related activities.

There are 4 sections under this center, which are: 

a) Mineral Reserve Evaluation Section

b) Mineral Economic Study and Promotion Section

c) Mineral Beneficiation Section

d) Mineralogy and Gemology Section
